NWGA Cancer Coalition Promotoras de Salud
Northwest Georgia Regional Cancer Coalition – Promotoras de Salud are community health advisors that bring cancer awareness, early detection and prevention to the Hispanic Latino population of Bartow, Chattooga, Floyd, Gordon and Polk counties of Northwest Georgia. The NWGA Promotoras also provide healthcare services and one-on-one education, and patient navigation services when needed.
NWGA Promotoras help search for the appropriate physicians, setting up appointments, interpreting (if needed), and researching resources available and for accessible for health care.
The “NWGA Promotoras” serve over 800 individuals per year through community events and health fairs in partnership with local healthcare providers that generously donate their services.
Their “Ferias de Salud” (Health Fairs) focus on Spanish speaking individuals that are indigent, uninsured or under insured. A variety of health services are offered to detect health issues that could lead to chronic diseases.
The leader? Sylvia Castillo. A very smart, charismatic and hard worker that is always interested in learning more about best practices when bridging health disparities and resources available for the Hispanic community she serves.
Their biggest challenge? Finding leaders in an extreme rural area to serve as advocates for the program. NWGA Promotoras would like to develop the younger generation of Hispanic/Latinos so they understand they are the difference makers in our future.
What does Sylvia wish for? A full-time paid promotora on staff for each county, so Hispanic families can have someone they can relate to and accompany them to interpret and assist when visiting a doctor.
